MDCAT 2020 result: Students unhappy with PMC

ISLAMABAD: Even though the Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) has reissued the results and rectified the errors that were pointed out  to them, the students are still frustrated with the regulator.

“PMC is a failed institution. Neither can it make a paper nor announce a result properly,” said the students, hours after the verified results were announced.

The students maintained that they were given out of syllabus questions in the  MDCAT exam. They also alleged that the names on the result certificates given to them were also incorrect.

PMC reissues MDCAT 2020 results

The updated result of the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) 2020 was announced by the Pakistan Medical Commission on Thursday after several candidates who appeared in the exam had complained of errors in the previous result.

The PMC, in a statement, said that after it released the National MDCAT result on December 16, it received numerous complaints from students that they had erroneously been marked absent.

"Some students also complained that their names and roll numbers did not match," it said.

The commission said that it had taken down the previous result to "ensure that no student was deprived of the correct result".

"The MDCAT result is a computer generated result. Hence, any investigation required it to be taken offline and reverified in its entirety through physical verification of students’ admit cards and examination answer sheets. Therefore, the examination team carried out a detailed scrutiny and reverification process over the last 30 hours," PMC said.

It said that "less than 2% of the total number of students" who took the exam faced these difficulties and submitted complaints to the commission.

According to an earlier announcement by PMC, 121,181 students had attempted the MDACT 2020.

Despite #MeToo scandal, sexism still rampant in Hollywood: study

Survey concludes some 67% of women reported experiencing gender harassment during the prior 12 months

LOS ANGELES: Three years after the #MeToo scandal roiled Hollywood, causing dozens of powerful men to lose their jobs, two-thirds of women who took part in a survey of the entertainment business released on Tuesday report continuing incidences of sexual harassment.

The survey by the Hollywood Commission also asked about racism, and found that fewer than half of those who took part believe that Hollywood values diverse backgrounds and points of view.

The online survey, launched in November 2019, was billed as the largest ever in the industry, embracing workers in television and film, commercials, live theater, music, broadcast news, talent agencies, public relations, and corporate settings.

Almost 10,000 people responded. Some 67% of women reported experiencing gender harassment during the prior 12 months, with 42% of women reporting unwanted sexual attention.

One person who took part anonymously told the commission that when they were working as an assistant, the chief executive of the company “gave me actual assignments to flirt with other powerful people in the industry to try to get my bosses more meetings.”

The commission, chaired by law professor Anita Hill, said Hollywood had made progress in tackling “significant culture and climate issues of harassment and discrimination” but more must be done.

Recommendations by the commission included limiting confidentiality and nondisclosure agreements, prohibiting bullying, increased mentorship, and bystander training that helps employees defuse racist or sexist incidents.

Hill became an icon for many women when she accused now-Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment in his nomination hearings in 1991. Thomas denied the accusations.

Kohli becomes fastest player to score 12,000 runs in ODIs, leaves behind Tendulkar

Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood took the key wicket of Virat Kohli for 63 not long after the India captain became the fastest player to score 12,000 runs in one-day internationals as the visitors scored 302-5 on Wednesday in the last of three ODI matches.

Kohli became the fastest player to score the 12,000 ODI career runs when he tapped Abbott to mid-off and took a quick single. Kohli achieved the feat in his 242nd innings, 59 innings quicker than Sachin Tendulkar.

The now-retired Tendulkar has the highest number of ODI runs with 18,426.

Kohli posted his 60th ODI half century before feathering a catch to Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey, a decision that went to the TV umpire after it was given not out on the field.

India, which lost the first two matches at the Sydney Cricket Ground, won the toss and elected to bat at Manuka Oval and hoped for a change in momentum. The visitors made up for a slow start with an unbeaten 150-run partnership between Hardik Pandya (92) and Ravindra Jadeja (66), a record for India for the sixth-wicket against Australia. The pair added 110 runs in the last 10 overs.

India lost both openers in the first 16 overs. Shikar Dhawan played a loose shot off Sean Abbott to Ashton Agar in the covers for 16, and Shubman Gill was trapped lbw for 33 trying to sweep Agar.

Pandya anchored the latter half of the innings, scoring 92 from 76 balls, while Jadeja's 66 came from 50 balls and contained five boundaries and three sixes.

Australia won the first ODI by 66 runs and the second by 51 to clinch the series. Australia batted first in both wins and teams batting first have won the last seven games at Manuka Oval.

Cameron Green made his ODI debut for Australia as a replacement for injured opener David Warner. The latter had sustained a groin strain while fielding in Sunday's series-deciding ODI win at the SCG.

After scores of 69 and 83 in the first two ODIs, Warner is hoping to recover in time for the test series, which starts Dec. 17 in Adelaide.

Green conceded 27 runs from his first four overs in ODI cricket. Agar returned the best figures for Australia with 2-44 from 10 overs, avoiding the India's run-scoring onslaught in the dying overs.

FIA finds Meesha 'guilty' of vilification drive against Ali Zafar

LAHORE: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has declared singer Meesha Shafi and eight others "guilty" of running a vilification campaign on social media against singer-actor Ali Zafar and asked the trial court to start its proceedings against them.

The FIA’s cybercrime Lahore wing on Tuesday submitted an interim challan before the court of a special judge central in the FIR registered on the complaint filed by Mr Zafar.

In the interim challan, the FIA said: “During the course of investigation so far Meera Shafi alias Meesha Shafi, Iffat Omar, Maham Javaid, Leena Ghani, Haseemus Zaman, Fariha Ayub, Syed Faizan Raza, Humna Raza and Ali Gul Pir have been found guilty in this case as per available oral and documentary evidences. However, the complainant recorded his statement in favour of Hamna Raza to the extent of accepting her apology, thus she is not required in the investigation furthermore.”

The FIA said Ms Shafi posted defamatory and false allegations of sexual harassment against Ali Zafar in April 19, 2018 but she failed to produce any witnesses before it in favour of her allegations. The other suspects also failed to provide evidence in favour of the direct allegations posted by them on social media. Resultantly, an FIR was registered on the court’s order in September last against them under section 20 (1) of Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 and R/W 109-PPC.

In November 2018, Ali Zafar had filed a complaint with the FIA cyber-crime wing, alleging that many social media accounts were posting “threats and defamatory material” against him. He provided details of some Twitter and Facebook accounts to support his claim.

Mr Zafar, in his complaint, had attached the pictures Ms Shafi had uploaded on her social media accounts but ‘discretely deleted just before making the allegation’. He had also submitted a ‘threat message’ sent to his manager on Instagram in Feb 2018.

“A twitter account @nehasaigol1, which posted 3,000 defamatory tweets against me and my family only in one year, [was] created 50 days before Meesha’s allegations of sexual harassment,” the singer-actor told the FIA with documentary ‘evidence’.

The FIA said Ms Shafi had appeared before the FIA cyber-crime wing with her team of lawyers in December 2019, but she failed to produce any witness in favour of her allegations (of sexual harassment) against Mr Zafar.

Zafar’s defamation suit against Ms Shafi is also pending in a sessions’ court.

Petrol prices increased by Rs3 per litre

ISLAMABAD: The government on Tuesday increased the prices of all petroleum products by three to 8pc with immediate effect for next 16 days.

According to an announcement by the Ministry of Finance, the ex-depot prices of high-speed diesel (HSD) and petrol were increased by Rs3 per litre while the prices of kerosene and light diesel oil (LDO) were jacked up by Rs5 per litre.

In doing so, the government took a significant revenue hit and reduced petroleum levy on petrol by about Rs4.50 per litre and about Rs2.51 per litre on HSD. On the other hand, it reduced petrol levy on kerosene by about 55 paisa per unit and increased by about 65 paisa per litre on LDO.

As such, the ex-depot price of HSD was fixed at Rs108.44 per litre instead of existing rate of Rs105.43 per litre, showing an increase of Rs3 (2.84pc). The HSD is mostly used in heavy transport vehicles, trains and agricultural engines like trucks, buses, tractors, tube-wells and threshers etc. This is one of the key contributors to inflation.

The ex-depot price of petrol was also set at Rs103.69 per litre instead of Rs100.69, showing an increase of Rs3 per litre or 2.97pc. Petrol is mostly used in private transport, small vehicles, rickshaws and two-wheelers.

The ex-depot price of kerosene was increased by Rs5 per litre (7.65pc) to Rs70.29 per litre instead of existing rate of Rs65.29. Kerosene oil is mostly used by unscrupulous elements for mixing with petrol and to some extent for lighting in very remote areas.

Likewise, the ex-depot rate of LDO was also increased by 7.95pc or Rs5 per litre to Rs67.86 per litre from its existing rate of Rs62.86. LDO is consumed by flour mills and a couple of power plants.

In revising the prices of petroleum products, the government did not pass on the full impact of increase in international prices in an apparent attempt not to affect a nascent declining trend in the rate of inflation.

It reduced petroleum levy on petrol by about Rs4.50 per litre to about Rs24.15 from Rs28.68 at present and about Rs2.50 per litre reduction in levy on HSD to Rs25.08 per litre from Rs27.57. Had the government kept the tax rates unchanged, petrol prices would have been higher.

Likewise, the petroleum levy on kerosene was reduced to Rs5.55 per litre from Rs6.10. On the other hand, it increase levy on LDO by 65 paisa per litre from zero to round off the increase.

The government is currently charging a standard rate of 17pc general sales tax (GST) across the board to generate additional revenues while petroleum levy is slightly lower than maximum permissible limit. Until January last year, the government was charging 0.5pc GST on LDO, 2pc on kerosene, 8pc on petrol and 13pc on HSD.

As such, the government is now charging a total of about Rs42 per litre tax on petrol and about Rs59 per litre on HSD.

Over the last few months, the government has been increasing petroleum levy rates instead of GST as levy remains in the federal kitty while GST goes to the divisible pool taxes and thus about 57pc cent share is grabbed by the provinces.

The petrol and HSD are two major products that generate most of revenue for the government because of their massive and yet growing consumption in the country. Average petrol sales are touching 700,000 tonnes per month against the monthly consumption of around 600,000 tonnes of HSD. The sales of kerosene oil and LDO are generally less than 11,000 and 2,000 tonnes per month per respectively.

Under the revised mechanism, oil prices are revised by the government on a fortnightly basis to pass on international prices published in Platt’s Oilgram instead of previous mechanism of monthly calculations on the basis of import cost of the Pakistan State Oil at present.

Biggest K2 winter expedition begins

GILGIT: The biggest international K2 winter expedition began on Tuesday as eight Sherpas from Nepal left Skardu for the K2 base camp.

Other members of the 50-strong team from 18 countries will depart later.

Chhang Dawa Sherpa, 39, leads the expedition.

The team comprises 27 Sherpas from Nepal and 23 men and women from Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Bulgaria, Netherlands, Poland, Greece, Spain, Canada, Finland, USA, Chile, Italy, Romania and Slovenia. Climbers Imtiaz Hussain and Akbar Ali from Sadpara are part of the expedition.

Blue Sky Treks and Tours has organised the expedition. Its managing director Ghulam Mohammad told Dawn that eight Sherpas reached Skardu from Nepal on Monday and left for K2 base camp on Tuesday.

He said after one week trek, Sherpas would prepare the base camp, while other members of the team would reach Skardu next week.

Mr Ghulam Mohammad said more Sherpas would fly to Islamabad on Dec 18, while other climbers would arrive in Pakistan between Dec 16 and Dec 21 and would move to the base camp on Dec 24.

He said currently, the temperature at base camp was minus 10-20 degree centigrade.

The MD said a total of 56 climbers from 19 countries would attempt to summit K2, the world’s second highest peak (8,611m), in the current winter season.

Meanwhile, inclement weather on K2 troubled a three-member climbing team.

Climbers John Snorri from Iceland and Pakistanis Mohammad Ali Sadpara and his son Sajid Sadpara are reported to be struggling to climb K2 from the base camp.

On Monday, they trekked to the advanced base camp and planned to fix lines up to camps 1 and 2 but bad weather forced them to return.

The team began their trek to K2 base camp from Skardu last week.

Harry and Meghan will produce and host podcasts for Spotify

Britain’s Prince Harry and his wife Meghan will produce and host podcasts for Spotify’s streaming service, the Swedish company said on Tuesday, starting with a holiday special that will be released this month.

Under a multi-year agreement, the couple’s newly formed Archewell Audio will produce programming that “uplifts and entertains audiences around the world” and features “diverse perspectives and voices,” Spotify said in a statement.

The podcasts will be available free through Spotify, the company that leads the streaming music market. Spotify also offers more than 1.5 million podcast titles such as “The Michelle Obama Podcast” and “Mama Knows Best” by influencer Addison Rae, and reaches more than 320 million active users per month.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Harry and Meghan’s first podcast installment will be a holiday special featuring “stories of hope and compassion” to celebrate the new year, the statement said. Their first complete series is expected next year.

“What we love about podcasting is that it reminds all of us to take a moment and to really listen, to connect to one another without distraction,” the couple said in a joint statement.

“With the challenges of 2020, there has never been a more important time to do so, because when we hear each other, and hear each other’s stories, we are reminded of how interconnected we all are,” the pair added.

The deal is the latest move by Harry and Meghan, known officially as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, to make a living outside of the royal family.

The couple moved to Southern California with their infant son Archie this year after stepping back from royal duties in January. In September, they signed an exclusive multi-year production deal for TV programming with Netflix Inc.

Tom Cruise lashes out at Mission Impossible crew for not following Covid protocols

Tom Cruise let rip over an apparent breach of Covid-19 safety protocols on the London set of the new Mission: Impossible movie, telling crew members they would be fired if they don’t obey the rules, Britain’s Sun newspaper reported on Tuesday.

In expletive-filled remarks captured on audio tape obtained by The Sun, the star and producer of the action film yelled at the crew about lapses of social distancing and other rules that allow movies to be made during the coronavirus pandemic.

A source close to the production said the tape was authentic. Cruise’s representative declined to comment.

“I’m on the phone with every f***ing studio at night, insurance companies, producers, and they’re looking at us and using us to make their movies,” Cruise told the crew on the set.

“Do you understand the responsibility that you have? Because I will deal with your reason. And if you can’t be reasonable and I can’t deal with your logic, you’re fired,” he added, according to the tape.

The Sun did not say when the incident took place, but the filmmakers arrived in London in early December.

The seventh Mission: Impossible was one of the first movies to shut down production because of the coronavirus when it abandoned filming in Venice, Italy, in February.

Production resumed in September, with filming in Italy, Norway and London. Cruise in July personally appealed to Norway’s prime minister to shoot parts of the film in Norway under modified quarantine rules.

The Paramount Pictures film is scheduled to be released in November 2021.

Cruise told the crew Hollywood was relying on movies like Mission: Impossible to keep the beleaguered industry going.

“We want the gold standard. They’re back there in Hollywood making movies right now because of us! Because they believe in us and what we’re doing,” he said, according to the audio tape.

Mission: Impossible is one of the biggest franchises in Hollywood, with 2018’s Mission: Impossible-Fallout taking more than $791 million at the worldwide box office.

Indian farmers intensify protests as deadlock over new laws continue

Tens of thousands of Indian farmers intensified their protests on Sunday against three new agricultural laws aimed at overhauling food grain procurement and pricing rules by allowing private companies direct access to the vast agrarian sector.

Angry farmers staged demonstrations near New Delhi after rejecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assurances that the laws would double farmers’ income.

Six rounds of talks between government officials and farmer union leaders have failed to resolve the challenge faced by Modi’s government.

“Hundreds of farmers will launch a tractor trolley march to New Delhi to voice our grievances against the new laws,” said Kamal Preet Singh Pannu, a leader of Sanyukta Kisan Andolan (United Farmers’ Protest), one of 30 groups against the laws.

“Government wants to discredit and crush our movement, but we will continue to protest peacefully,” Pannu said.

Local authorities increased security measures, deploying police and putting up barricades to prevent farmers from entering New Delhi in large numbers. Opposition parties and some senior economists have lent support to the protests.

“I’ve now studied India’s new farm bills & realize they are flawed and will be detrimental to farmers,” Kaushik Basu, a former chief economic adviser to the federal government, wrote on Twitter.

“Our agriculture regulation needs change, but the new laws will end up serving corporate interests more than farmers. Hats off to the sensibility & moral strength of India’s farmers,” Basu said.

The farmers are protesting the three laws that the government says are meant to overhaul procurement procedures and grant them more options to sell their produce.

Ministers from Modi’s government at an industry event on Saturday in New Delhi appealed to leading industrialists and businesses to explain the benefits of the new laws to farmers.

Babar Azam ruled out of New Zealand T20 series due to thumb fracture

Pakistan cricket captain Babar Azam will not be available for the upcoming New Zealand T20Is after suffering a fracture in his right thumb during Sunday morning’s practice session.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the development in a statement released on Sunday, which stated that Azam suffered the injury during a throw-down session after which he was taken to a local hospital where X-rays confirmed the fracture.

"As such, Babar will be unable to attend nets for at least 12 days, meaning he will not be available for the December 18, 20 and 22, T20Is to be played in Auckland, Hamilton and Napier, respectively," the statement reads.

Doctors will continue to monitor his injury in the meantime, before they confirm his participation in the first Test match, scheduled for Dec 26 in Bay Oval.

Vice-captain Shadab Khan is also carrying a groin niggle, which limited his participation in Sunday’s net sessions to batting only, according to the statement. A decision on his participation in the Auckland T20I will be made closer to the match, it added.

"Injuries are part and parcel of professional sport," said Pakistan head coach Misbahul Haq, adding that he remained optimistic that this would open up opportunities for "other highly talented and exciting players to step-up [...] and try to prove that the Pakistan side is a complete package."

“I have spoken with Babar and he is sad to miss the T20I series as he was fully focused and keenly looking forward to the T20Is," he said.

Commenting on Shadab Khan's groin niggle, the Pakistan coach confirmed that he was under observation of doctors and the management remained optimistic for his return to the T20Is.
